Home energy efficiency
Making your home more energy efficient has a variety of benefits. It will not only help to reduce your carbon footprint, which is a crucial step in helping to tackle the climate emergency, but it could save you up to £600 on your bills and help you to keep a warmer, happier, healthier home.
There are a number of ways that you can get financial help to make your home more energy efficient.
Green Homes Grant vouchers
Homeowners in Dacorum, including landlords, can get up to £5,000 to pay part of the cost of energy-saving measures, such as insulation.
The Government will provide a voucher up to £5,000 that covers up to two-thirds of the cost of energy efficiency and low-carbon heat improvements to your home.
If you are a homeowner and you or a member of your household receives one of the qualifying benefits, the Government may cover 100 per cent of the cost of the improvements, up to £10,000.
What improvements can I get?
Vouchers must be used to install at least one primary home insulation or low-carbon heating measure.
If you choose to install at least one of the primary measures, you can use your voucher to help cover the cost of secondary measures.
The grant for the secondary measure is capped at the value of the grant provided for the primary measures. For example, if you receive a £400 voucher for a primary measure such as a cavity wall insulation, you will be able to receive a maximum of £400 for a secondary measure, such as an energy-efficient replacement door.
Primary and secondary measures
The voucher must be used to install at least one primary measure. This can be an insulation measure and/or a low carbon heating measure.

Low carbon heat measures
- air source, ground source or hybrid heat pump
- solar thermal
- biomass boilers
If you install at least one primary measure, your voucher can be used to help cover the cost of any of the following secondary measures:
- draught proofing
- double/triple glazing (where replacing single-glazed windows)
- secondary glazing (in addition to single glazing)
- external energy-efficient doors (replacing single glazed or solid doors installed before 2002)
- heating controls
- hot water tank thermostats and insulation.
How to get a Green Homes Grant voucher
- Use the Simple Energy Advice website to check if you’re eligible for a voucher and what measures you could get done.
- Choose which improvements you would like and see an estimate of how much this may cost.
- Use the website to help you to find registered installers to get quotes from to carry out the work.
- Apply for your voucher and wait for approval before going ahead. You must have the work completed by 31 March 2021.
If your application is successful, you'll be emailed the voucher - do not get any work done until you have received this. Once the work is complete, you'll need a dated copy of the invoice provided by the installer to redeem the voucher. The grant will then be paid directly to the installer on your behalf.
There is only enough funding for 600,000 households in England (just over two per cent of all homes), so make sure to apply as soon as possible.
The Energy Company Obligation (ECO) is a Government scheme to help reduce carbon emissions and tackle fuel poverty. Under ECO, energy suppliers fund the installation of energy-efficiency measures in British homes. The obligated energy suppliers work with installers to introduce certain efficiency measures into your home, such as loft or wall insulation, or heating measures.
What improvements can I get?
If you meet certain criteria, you could be eligible for low-cost or free home energy efficiency improvements, such as:
- Boiler replacements
- First time central heating systems
- Loft insulation
- Cavity wall insulation
- Under floor insulation
- Room in roof insulation
- External wall insulation
Am I eligible?
You may be able to receive ECO funding towards home energy efficiency if you meet certain eligibility criteria.

- Income-related Employment and Support Allowance
- Working Tax Credit

- Severe Disablement Allowance
- Industrial Injuries Disablement Benefit
- War Pensions Mobility Supplement
- Constant Attendance Allowance
- Armed Forces Independence Payment

If you have either low income and high energy costs, or low income and meet at least one of the vulnerability criteria then you can also be eligible.

High energy costs
Property with at least one of:
- 100mm or less loft insulation
- Unfilled cavity walls
- Uninsulated non-cavity wall
- No working central heating
A health condition made worse by the cold:
- People with cardiovascular conditions
- People with respiratory conditions (in particular chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and childhood asthma)
- People with mental health conditions
- People with disabilities
- People who are terminally ill
- People with autoimmune and immunodeficiency diseases (for example - lupus, cancer treatment, multiple sclerosis, diabetes, HIV)
- People with neurobiological and related diseases (for example - fibromyalgia, myalgic encephalomyelitis)
- People with haemoglobinopathies (for example - sickle cell disease, thalassaemia)
A vulnerability to the cold:
- People aged over 60 years old, particularly those over 75 years old
- Children aged under five and pregnant women
- People with addictions
- People who have attended hospital due to a fall
- People diagnosed with dementia
- Recent immigrants, asylum seekers and refugees (if living in private tenure)
- People who move in and out of homelessness
- Other illness exacerbated by the cold (confirmed by GP)
- People with musculoskeletal conditions (for example - arthritis, limited mobility)
- Households that have acute or long-term debt
- Householders that are in their home during working hours and/or have declared that they restrict heating use due to concerns about energy bills

Unlike the Green Homes Grant voucher scheme, there is no deadline to have ECO work completed.
Can I use the Green Homes Grant Voucher and ECO together?
You cannot claim a Green Homes Grant voucher towards the cost of a measure that has also had funding under ECO. However, you can claim both ECO funding and a Green Homes Grant voucher as long as they are each for different measures - for example, loft insulation and cavity wall insulation.

Minimum energy efficiency standards for the private rented sector
Since April 2020, all tenancies must have a minimum Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) energy rating of E under the Energy Efficiency (Private Rented Property) (England and Wales) Regulations 2015. The minimum standard is set to increase to an EPC energy rating of D by 2025 and C by 2030.
A home is required to have an EPC rating when it is constructed, sold or let. This is an example of an EPC. If you are letting a property, check the EPC rating in case you need to make improvements.

The Energy Savings Trust and Uswitch have outlined a wide range of easy actions that you can take today to help make your home more energy efficient - whether it is turning your thermostat down a degree, getting LED lightbulbs or turning your appliances off at the wall rather than keeping on standby.
