Mental health

Getting help for mental health can be a scary decision and a big step. It’s good to know you’re not alone and there are lots of organisations and people out there to support you through the process.

Urgent help

If you need urgent help, please call 999 or visit your local Accident and Emergency department.

Herts NHS support

If you want to speak to someone about your mental health or any problems or worries you may be having, please contact the Herts NHS mental health helpline on 0800 6444 101 (open 24 hours a day, seven days a week) or email hpft.spa@nhs.net (for non-urgent enquiries).

There is a range of support available, including specialist services for young people and older adults. Your options could include wellbeing services to help you manage your day-to-day mental health and moods or a range of therapy options. You can also speak to your GP who can help you to access this service.

For further information, visit the Hertfordshire Partnership website.

NHS resources

The NHS website has a range of advice and support, including information about self-help and accessing treatment options, resources that you can try straight away, and a list of helplines and organisations that can support you.

Wellbeing courses

New Leaf College is funded by the NHS to run wellbeing courses, which are free for anyone living in Hertfordshire.

Other ways to boost your mental wellbeing

Research shows that being part of a group, volunteering and even small amounts of exercise all boost our mental wellbeing. If you want to find out more about what's available locally, please see our community connections page.

If going to a new group or activity feels like a big step, it can help to go with a friend or to contact the organiser first so that someone is ready to welcome you. Some groups also have transport provided.
